Addis Ababa(kalitimes)– Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed today appointed General Seare Mekonen as the new Chief of Staff of the National Defense Force of Ethiopia effective today.
He will replace General Samora Yunis, who retired today.
“The nation will be forever grateful to General Samora for his distinguished services,” Fitsum Arega, Chief of Staff at the Prime Minister’s office Said by His tweeter paged.
He was awarded Ethiopia’s highest military honor. General Samora served the military for the past 42 years.
The Premier also decided to restore stars and full ranks to Major General Alemeshet Degfe and Brigadier General Asaminew Tsgie.
The two Generals were stripped of their stars and ranks in the past but will now retire with their full pension.
Also Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed today appointed General Adem Mohammed as Director General of National Intelligence and Security Services effective today. According to a statement issued by office of the Prime Minister, his appointment took into account his work experience. While also Former speaker of House peoples represent Mr abadula gemeda and Former ambassador of America to Ethiopia Ambassador Girma birrus those have had worked long term in government institutions retired.

Premier calls for border, joint strategy between Ethiopia and Somalia to promote stability Addis Ababa(kalitimes).Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed stressed the need to adopt and implement a border and joint strategy to promote stability in the Horn of Africa. The Premier made the remark during his talks with Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, known as Farmajo, today in Mogadishu. “I would like to emphasize and in my belief we need to adopt and implement a border and joint strategy to promote regional stability in the Horn of Africa, while we need to remain vigilant in our counter terrorism efforts,” he said in a joint press conference issued after the discussion. The Prime Minister further highlighted the need to attach attention towards addressing extremism and regional conflicts, promote trade and investment as well as to tackle poverty in the region. Speaking on his today’s visit, the Premier said “I’m here to open a new chapter, a new relationship and a new vision,” adding “Ethiopia and Somalia can undertake common projects to strengthen and consolidate their partnership.” President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed for his part said Ethiopia and Somalia share common history, culture, tradition, and most importantly blood relationship. “The visit today deepens our strong political and social relations,” he said, adding “I’m committed to take our relationship to the next level.” “Noting can divide our two brotherly nations,” he said adding it is “our obligation to ensure peace and prosperity of our great two nations through economic integration.” He also paid tribute to the tremendous sacrifices made by Ethiopian troops who served in AMISOM in the fight against terrorist organizations that pose an existential threat not only to Somalia but also to the region. The President finally called for the implementation of full economic integration between the two countries to bring economic growth and promote investment through development of infrastructure, including transportation, highway, energy and train, among other areas.
